Differences in communication have functionality for both genders and appear to have derived out of an evolutionary nature. The communication roles that many males and females continue to display are typical of behavior that has long been expected of them. It is only within the past two to three decades that women’s rights have been regarded seriously. Therefore, many monumental changes regarding gender have only recently begun taking place. This causes gender related approaches to conversation thrive. As stated in much of the research however, this may not be completely negative. All people have roles to play during some part of their day. They may take on the role of teacher at work and switch to being a father upon arrival at home. Roles are necessary for people to make sense of and organize their world. In the same fashion, males and females have a role to play. Although much of the male role has been stereotyped as dominant and controlling in nature, this is not always the case. Similarly, the female role has been viewed upon as docile and selfless, which also is not always accurate. As roles of males and females are changing, conversational styles will change with them. Thus, it is functional for gender-specific conversation to occur, and in fact, may alter but never fall on one continuum.
