In the past, it could be argued, and from our observations, that Weir adopted an essentially “ethnocentric” approach to its business activities as much of its business was dictated from the UK, arguably, Scotland. Despite the company clearly attempting to adopt a more polycentric approach, it is our opinion that the ethnocentric approach has undeniably had an impact on subsequent approaches in that it has had such an overwhelming influence on the organisational culture within the company. As time has passed, new employees, new nationalities and new markets, have brought differing working practices, values and beliefs to the company. This is not a tangible factor, and is extremely tied to and inextricably linked to national identity, beliefs and subsequent organisational culture. The same could be said for all companies operating in today’s global environment. Despite our apparent “converging commonality” (Levitt, 1993), with regard to consumer tastes, vast differences still remain because we are all shaped by the environments in which we live and these environments, despite globalisation, are still essentially variant with different languages, beliefs, religions and value systems all coming in to play. In the same way as companies operating in consumer markets must be aware of differing tastes, so too must companies in all sectors recognise how culture impacts on the way they manage their daily business activities. Without a doubt, Weir will continually strive to adopt a more polycentric approach, but this does not imply that cultural difference in the markets in which it operates in can be ignored. In our opinion, Weir need to adopt a much more systematic approach to the cultural diversities which it faces, most importantly, it must recognise these and not assume that everyone will readily adopt or embrace new working practices as they are introduced. It is difficult to define, but the whole area is so tied to individual country level influences, that these must be managed locally before they can be implemented company-wide. It must aim to create a more unified vision of what Weir is about, as this in itself will automatically create a recognisable commonality among its employees and markets that will subsequently be more easily managed and ultimately effective in terms of management and business activities.
