This was taken to mean that an individual remembered a situation to be more serious, depending on the language used. The language used in questioning, therefore, provided external information about the accident[3]. The reconstructive hypothesis indicates that individuals remembering an event cannot distinguish between what actually occurred and what had been artificially added by a secondary event such as a question. Thus we remember the past in the context of the present[4] and post-event information can affect the way in which an event is remembered[5].However, the research was criticized as being distant and not related to life and devoid of emotional significance as it took place in a laboratory and involved very brief films which had little bearing on the individual’s life[6]. Therefore the current study builds on the Loftus and Palmer research using a contemporary piece of film (Ice Age 2). This was chosen due to its high popularity and the fact that it appeals to individuals of all ages and usually evokes some form of emotional response. It was felt that an operationalised measure could be obtained in terms of the length of a particular scene from memory; this scene length being believed to differ according to how individuals were questioned about it.The chosen scene involves the character Ellie being trapped in a cave filling with water. In reality, the scene lasted for less than two minutes onscreen but the method of asking about the scene should affect an individual’s perception of this time. The use of a leading question and subjective verbs was intended to increase the impression of seriousness, which would increase the amount of time that an individual though the [more serious] scene had lasted.
