They also concluded that the government should do more to educate young people in schools and from that point of view the partnership between government and the YMCA was one that everyone thought would be beneficial. We moved on to discuss how the young people viewed their teachers and adults around them. Whether they felt they could trust them if they needed to talk or to make them aware of another child that they felt needed help. The majority said no. And felt that any problem taken to an adult in school would just be taken straight to another adult or to their parents/guardian. They felt that this was the general attitude towards young people, that their views and opinions were still not being understood or acted on by people in authority. This led us into assessing the opinions of Government itself. Some of the young people felt that their opinions were appreciated by their local government and acknowledged new measures that seemed to be being implemented in terms of child and young person collaborative planning, but most thought that their views were not really considered when making decisions.The young people felt that it was necessary for them to be consulted on decisions that directly affected them and their lives. The group thought the work that the government were undertaking with the YMCA and Centrepoint on working directly with homeless people gathering further information relating to their problems and issues was extremely important and useful but also expressed a need for children and young people who were not in positions of depravation and neglect to also be consulted with, as they could help bring a more objective insight into the reason why young people feel and deal with their own insecurities and fears. It would also be a good idea based on the fact that the government should be preventing the numbers of children and young people becoming homeless, rather than just focusing on the ones that already are.
