Interpretations of poetry are split between a regard for the historical presentation of specific poems, and the view that a “text” rather than a publication is the highest way to regard a text. As highlighted by McGann, the problem with the latter is that it fails to contextualise the historical significance of the poetry at the time. In looking at universal techniques and genius, the critic that observes the “text” often fails to take into account the importance of the readership, the audience and the conditions of publication, and of how this has an important effect on how the poem is regarded, and how it is constructed, both by poet and reader. The presentational discrepancies between different publications of an identical text highlights how the anchorage of different devices can alter our perception of the poem, which can affect the way in which the poem is actually regarded in itself. Using the examples I have cited, the 1902 edition of the text has no objective, “literary” material present. There is also additional advertising in the book. This, ultimately, changes the significance of the poem, and alters the dynamic between the reader and the writer of a given text. Alternatively, the 1975 edition contains extended notes designed to decipher and detail the structural passages of the text. It is evident from that book that Tennyson is regarded differently in 1975 than in 1902. An etching of his head frames the 1975 work, whereas in 1902 no such anchorage is existent. The critical introduction also serves to firmly establish Tennyson as a “great” poet among his readers. Ultimately, this changes the ways in which the poem interrelates with its social environment, and ultimately sheds light upon how a given poem is produced, sold and read in the temporally confined environment from which the product emerged.
