By allowing our participation with in the narrative, Hitchcock creates an alignment with Jeff, which ensures that as his hunches and facts fall short of collusion, that we find as much frustration in their failures as he does. This audience buy-in allows for a very strong climax and denouement, due to our almost personal interaction with Jeff and his neighbors. The disparity, however, from when Jeff was paying attention to the camera and when he would look away to perform another task, and what the audience was shown, was a narrative technique which created a division between what the audience knew, specifically about the salesman leaving with a woman who seemed to be his wife, and the fact that Jeff had not witnessed this event.
