This dissertation intends to produce the evidence base to support the concept of bacterial intelligence. The concept needs to be defined and explored with the opinions of differing authorities being consulted, critically appraised and then presented with varying degrees of strength of evidence. The objective is to produce a dissertation which covers the major aspects of the issues involved, to present then with appropriate and contemporary references and then to provide discussions and draw appropriate conclusions at the end of the work.Signal transduction is a huge and rapidly evolving topic. It has evolved in a quantum leap with the advent of the ability to sequence and interpret individual bacterial genomes. This has brought with it the ability to compare the number and type of transduction mechanisms and consider the relationship of such mechanisms not only to the total genome but also in the context of phylogeny of seemingly related species. The concept of bacterial intelligence is intimately related with the ability of the organism to recruit and produce a response from its available transduction systems. This dissertation also aims to characterise some of the individual transduction systems and use them as illustrative examples to support the arguments relating to phylogenetic relationships, evolution and bacterial intelligence.
