The table shows the blood constituents that are filtered from the glomerulus into the capsular space due to hydrostatic pressure. The filtrate contains all blood constituents except for the blood cells and the plasma proteins as these are too large to pass through the pores in the capillary lining. This is called ultrafiltration. As the filtrate travels through the different sections of tubule some of the constituents that are essential to the body are reabsorbed back into the bloodstream. For example in a healthy human all of the glucose and most of the mineral salts along with some of the water should be reabsorbed while the filtrate is in the proximal convoluted tubule. As the filtrate moves into the Loop of Henle a ‘counter current multiplier’ occurs where ions such as sodium and chloride become reabsorbed. The extent to which sodium chloride is reabsorbed depends on the overall blood volume. If blood volume is low then the hormone aldersterone stimulates sodium chloride to diffuse back into the bloodstream. Reabsorbing these ions back into the blood results in high ion concentrations, and so most of the water from the filtrate is subsequently reabsorbed in order to dilute the concentration. This has the effect of increasing blood volume and decreasing the amount of urine produced. The majority of water reabsorption occurs by the process of osmosis from the distal convoluted tubule and the collecting duct.
